We as self defense instructors are seeing an increase in men and women signing up for self defense instruction. With the increase of crime and violence affecting not only big city residents but also now in small rural areas. Families are making time to learn how to protect themselves. While we as self defense instructors like to think our self defense techniques can guarantee our students protection from violence. The best self defense is avoidance.
Here are some tips everyone should know.
Walk with purpose and your head held high.
Never stop to respond to a stranger’s questions, respond while walking away.
When leaving work late, leave with a group of co- workers.
Walk in the middle of the sidewalk when walking alone incase someone is hiding in the bushes you have more time to respond.
Walk and park in well lit areas.
Keep your car doors locked at all times while driving or parked.
When walking to your car look underneath, around, behind and inside to make sure no one is there.
While walking be aware of shadows around you.
Carry maze/pepper spray in an accessible area so it can be reached in seconds.
Practice drawing your self defense product, the faster you draw it the faster your attacker is stopped.
If you are being forced inside a car try grabbing a light pole and hang on onto it.
If you are placed into a trunk of a car the newer models have an emergency release button inside. If in an older model punch or kick out the tail light and stick out your hand and wave to get peoples attention.
By focusing on avoidance tactics and preventive measures your less like to be targeted for crime and violence. If you are targeted yell “fire” so you attract attention to yourself. Remain calm and use common sense.
